South Lake Union has undergone a remarkable Renaissance in the last ten years. Home to little more than windowless warehouses and a few factories, this neighborhood had little identity and less appeal.
But since its "adoption" by Paul Allen, the area has become a place where you can live, work and walk. Allen has driven this revitalization through building projects. South Lake Union is now home to several high-rise condos, the REI flagship store, the Pan Pacific Hotel and an enormous Whole Foods. Several high-tech companies have also opened offices including Microsoft and Amazon.com.
All this has attracted urbanites who want to live downtown, keep their cars parked in the garage and walk or take the streetcar.
